Mural Art

I know its been a while since my last post, but I promise it will be worth the wait: I completed my mural for the Fabulous Fox theatre!  Located on a creepy, metal door between the fifth and sixth floors of dressing rooms.  Here is a step-by-step series of pictures (time-lapse, if you will) showing the growth of the painting from beginning to end.  Once everyone has signed, I'll post a picture of that as well.  Here goes:

I'd penciled in the outline of the family, and I didn't want to lose the placement, so I painted white around the pencil lines.  In retrospect, it would have been much easier to paint a white oval and then pencil the family, but I didn't have paints until the following day and time was crunched.  On we go:

The background is almost all finger-painting.

Base coats and a little shading on Fester.

Hard at work.  It took forever to get Morticia's eyes right.

And finally, the completed picture:

At first I thought the background was too bright, but it really seems to balance the more greyish tones in the family's clothing.  The frame is also slightly off-center, but hey - they're Addams Family members.  They don't mind.

I didn't want to sign the actual door (it felt a little tacky), so I put my signature off to the left with a cartoon of Tassle (one of our featured puppets).

Then, the hair department wanted a little something special for their wall.  Here's what I came up with:

All in all, I'm happy with how things turned out.  Apparently I'll be painting murals across the country - so let me know if you have any fun ideas.

I'm sure you're wondering how Gil is fairing.

He's been enjoying delicious coffee with heart-shaped sugar cubes and sampling some of the brunch places in town - most notably, Rooster:

Gil was a little intimidated by this Rooster's impression of a Velociraptor.

He also accompanied my room mate, Sam, to the doctor to get a prescription.  Her condition wasn't serious, but we'll leave her private affairs off the web.  I will say that Gil was determined to see that she was calm and comfortable:

While Sam waited at the pharmacy, Gil and I took a tour of Culinaria's baking aisle.  Soon he was longing for home, a kitchen, and my cakes.

I had to pry him away from the cocoa section.

-----------------------------------

Last, but not least, tonight after the show we were all invited to attend a local halloween horror house for free!  We're talking a three-level warehouse packed with things that scream, slap, snap, roar, and generally scare the piss out of a person.  I lead the other ladies through the maze, tipping them off to scary things approaching, sometimes pulling them away from live people in costumes.  I was fine until the third level, which was a 3D-glasses and glo-paint Clown party.  I'm not a fan of clowns... haven't been since I saw Killer Clowns From Outer Space with my brother as kids.  They had a whole room based on the film - specifically live people cocooned in cotton candy and ready for blood reaping.  Not.  My.  Scene.

Still, we had a fabulous time.  They treated us like celebrities and wanted to get autographs and pictures before we left.  The final room was an homage to great horror films of our time (Alien, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc) - complete with life size models and a "working" electric chair.  This next picture of Sam in the chair is my favorite of the evening:

Giant, vibrating chair.  Joyful.

Here are some of the life-size movie models:

And here's Emily, one of our "tour guides" for the house.

Of course, only now do I realize that he's looking RIGHT AT ME in this picture.  Does this mean I need to have a SAW movie marathon in the near future?

Methinks yes.

----------------------------------

I'll leave you with a few photos from around town.  I passed an old movie theatre that posted clever quips along with the movie titles:

The street was lined with Hollywood stars and explanations.  This one reminded me of my Dad:

Last, but not least, sometimes you have to stand in the artwork, even though they tell you not to.  Live the dream, kids, and I'll see you next time here on First National Swing.

  2. The mural looks amazing. I had no idea you paint so well. Do you draw too? I love that after 10 years of friendship I'm still learning new things about you.
